Promoting, Developing and Practicing Archery in the North Down and Peninsula Region
At Lough Cuan we endeavour to make archery fun, enjoyable, safe and inclusive (for all members). However we fully realise the importance of providing a supportive and safe environment to provide the best outcomes for children, young people and adults at risk and our policies emphasise our commitment to this.
Everyone involved in archery in a paid or voluntary capacity, must abide by Archery GB’s Safeguarding and Protecting Children and Young People Policy, Procedures, Code of Conduct and guidance relating to young people. This includes contractors and commissioned service providers.
Affiliated clubs and organisations must:
▶ Understand safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility
▶ Abide by and disseminate Archery GB’s safeguarding policies, procedures, and guidance
▶ Abide by and disseminate Archery GB’s code of conduct
▶ Abide by and disseminate Archery GB’s Photography and Filming Children and Young People Policy
▶ Ensure the Welfare Officer has completed specialist training and vetting checks. This specialist role must be known to all members and Archery GB
▶ Follow Archery GB’s Safer Recruitment Policy including vetting checks for all those in regulated activity. Refer to Archery GB’s safeguarding policies and vetting check web pages
▶ Ensure safeguarding training is updated every 3 years by those working in regulated activity
▶ Follow Archery GB’s Safeguarding Reporting Procedures where there are concerns relating to the safety of young people. Refer to our Report a Concern web page
At Lough Cuan Children and Young people and all adults are a valued and integral part of our club and we acknowledge the duty of care to safeguard and promote the welfare of children, young people and adults at risk and are committed to ensuring safeguarding practice reflects statutory responsibilities, Assembly & Government guidance, Archery GB guidelines and complies with best practice.
A child or young person, as referred to in this document, is any person under the age of 18 (both terms may be used).
Our policy:
• recognises that the welfare and interests of children and young people are paramount in all circumstances.
• aims to ensure that regardless of age, gender, religion or beliefs, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or socio-economic background, all children and young people:
• have a positive and enjoyable experience of ar-chery as members of Lough Cuan Bowmen in a safe and child centred environment;
• are protected from all aspects abuse whilst participating in archery or outside of the activity.
Lough Cuan Bowmen acknowledges that some children, including disabled children and young people or those from ethnic minority communities, can be particularly vulnerable to abuse and we accept the responsibility to take reasonable and appropriate steps to ensure their welfare.
• promoting and prioritising the safety and wellbeing of children and young people;
• ensuring all members understand their roles and responsibilities in respect of safeguarding and are provided with appropriate learning opportunities to recognise, identify and respond to signs of abuse, neglect and other safeguarding concerns relating to children, young people and vulnerable adults;
• ensuring appropriate action is taken in the event of incidents/concerns of abuse and support provided to the individual(s) who raise or disclose the concern;
• ensuring that confidential, detailed and accurate records of all safeguarding concerns are main-tained and securely stored;
• recruiting staff and volunteers safely, ensuring all necessary checks are made:
• ensuring robust safeguarding arrangements and procedures are in operation.
The policy and procedures will be promoted and are mandatory for everyone involved in Lough Cuan Bowmen. Failure to comply with the policy and procedures will be addressed without delay and may ultimately result in dismissal/exclusion from the club.

In order o contextualise the Archery GB guidance on Safeguarding we have produced a club policy to make it more relevant to our local context, while still fully aligning with the principles and values of the Archery GB guidance and documents. The Safeguarding Board for Northern Ireland (SBNI) is to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people in Northern Ireland by coordinating the work and ensuring the effectiveness of each person or body represented on the SBNI Board.
